Registering an imported US car in Abu Dhabi: steps, documents and fees

Sources checked 20 October 2026. Not legal advice.

Most guides to registering an imported car in the UAE are about Dubai. This one covers Abu Dhabi, using only official pages. The federal steps are the same in every emirate: customs certificate, MOIAT checks, inspection, insurance, then registration with the emirate's traffic authority. In Abu Dhabi, most of it runs through TAMM. Getting the car here is covered in Shipping a car from the USA to the UAE. Costs line by line are in Landed cost in Dubai.

Step 1: the federal checks come first

  • Banned types: MOIAT says national requirements prohibit the import, licensing and insuring of burnt, scrapped, flooded and disassembled cars, cars damaged beyond repair and cars with major manufacturing defects (MOIAT, checked 20 Oct 2026). Details: the plates guide.
  • Product Status Statement: MOIAT confirms the imported used vehicle "is eligible for registration in the traffic system". AED 200 (about $54.46), and it needs a UAE ID and the VIN (MOIAT, checked 20 Oct 2026 · estimate — confirm locally).
  • Product label cards: AED 1 per card, 7 cards (MOIAT, checked 20 Oct 2026 · estimate — confirm locally).

Step 2: the customs certificate (VCC)

  • Abu Dhabi Customs issues the customs certificate for vehicle registration digitally through TAMM, with a QR code, and sends its data to the federal traffic system (Abu Dhabi Media Office, 30 May 2022).
  • Fee: AED 30 (about $8.17) for the Vehicle Clearing Certificate (Abu Dhabi Customs fees guide, checked 20 Oct 2026 · estimate — confirm locally). The single-window page lists the same AED 30 and "Businesses" as the customer type (ATLP, checked 20 Oct 2026, page summary only).
  • The official pages don't say whether a private buyer can request the VCC directly. Ask your clearing agent or Abu Dhabi Customs.
  • The VCC isn't only an Abu Dhabi requirement: Sharjah Customs also says "No vehicle will be registered without producing the VCC" (Sharjah Customs, checked 20 Oct 2026).

Step 3: inspection and insurance

  • Inspection: u.ae lists a passed inspection at an authorised testing centre as the first registration step (u.ae, checked 20 Oct 2026). The Ministry of Interior lists passing the technical inspection for used vehicles as a condition (MOI, checked 20 Oct 2026, page summary only). Abu Dhabi Police e-Services list technical-inspection requests (Abu Dhabi Police, checked 20 Oct 2026).
  • Insurance: an electronic insurance document from an authorised insurer (u.ae). MOI lists insurance valid for 13 months (MOI, checked 20 Oct 2026).
  • Fines: all fines must be paid. They can be paid with the service fees (u.ae).
  • Fees: inspection fees aren't published on these official pages. Ask the testing centre.

Step 4: register the car (import car to Abu Dhabi)

  • Abu Dhabi Mobility handles vehicle registration and ownership transfer, digitally through TAMM, using UAE Pass and an active traffic file (Abu Dhabi Mobility, checked 20 Oct 2026).
  • Abu Dhabi Police e-Services also list "Issue New Vehicle Registration" (Abu Dhabi Police, checked 20 Oct 2026).
  • Documents (federal list): one vehicle document (VCC, transfer, export or possession certificate), original Emirates ID and electronic insurance. Companies also need an official letter in Arabic, a trade licence copy, a signature endorsement and an authorisation letter (u.ae, checked 20 Oct 2026).
  • You collect the ownership card (Mulkiya) and plates at the end (u.ae).

Put it into the free calculator

The live max bid calculator is a free USD worksheet with no account: max bid = resale − repair − buyer fee − transport − title and registration − target profit. Put the VCC, MOIAT fees, inspection, plates and registration into Title and registration (divide AED by 3.6725 for USD). Freight goes into Transport. It has no customs fields and doesn't know the UAE.

FAQ

How do I register an imported car in Abu Dhabi?

The UAE government portal lists the steps: a passed technical inspection at an authorised testing centre, insurance, all fines paid, then an application through an approved channel, the registration fee, and collecting the ownership card (Mulkiya) and plates (u.ae, updated 19 Aug 2026, checked 20 Oct 2026). In Abu Dhabi, vehicle registration runs through the TAMM platform with UAE Pass and an active traffic file (admobility.gov.ae, checked 20 Oct 2026). Confirm the details with Abu Dhabi Mobility before you bid.

What documents are needed to register an imported car in the UAE?

u.ae lists one vehicle document (a Vehicle Clearance Certificate, or a transfer, export or possession certificate), the original Emirates ID and an electronic insurance document, plus company documents if a company is registering the car (u.ae, checked 20 Oct 2026). MOIAT's Product Status Statement confirms an imported used vehicle is eligible for registration in the traffic system (moiat.gov.ae, checked 20 Oct 2026).

How much is the customs certificate (VCC) in Abu Dhabi?

AED 30. Abu Dhabi Customs' fee guide lists the Vehicle Clearing Certificate at AED 30 under Cabinet Resolution No. 45 of 2009 (adcustoms.gov.ae, checked 20 Oct 2026). Since May 2022 the certificate is issued digitally through TAMM, with a QR code, and its data goes to the federal traffic system (Abu Dhabi Media Office, 30 May 2022). Estimate — confirm locally.

Do imported used cars need an inspection before registration?

Yes, for used vehicles. The Ministry of Interior's vehicle-ownership service lists passing the technical inspection for used vehicles and insurance valid for 13 months among its conditions (moi.gov.ae, checked 20 Oct 2026, from the page summary because the page did not load for us). Inspection fees were not on any official page we read.

Can a flood or salvage car be registered in Abu Dhabi?

MOIAT says national requirements prohibit the import, licensing and insuring of burnt, scrapped, flooded and disassembled cars, cars damaged beyond repair and cars with major manufacturing defects (moiat.gov.ae, checked 20 Oct 2026). That is a federal rule, so it applies in Abu Dhabi. Other damage isn't on the list but still has to pass MOIAT's checks and the inspection. See the plates guide first.

Where do these fees go in the FlipRadar calculator?

In Title and registration. The free max bid calculator is a USD worksheet with no customs fields: put the VCC, MOIAT fees, inspection, plates and registration there (AED ÷ 3.6725 for USD), and keep freight in Transport.
