Importing a US auction car into the UAE: what the official pages say

Sources last checked 19 October 2026.

Buying a salvage or clean-title car at a US auction and bringing it to the UAE? This page collects what UAE government pages say about damage rules, duty, VAT and registration, with a link and date for every point. It isn't legal or customs advice, and FlipRadar isn't a customs broker. Rules and fees change, so confirm every figure with a licensed clearing agent, MOIAT or your emirate's traffic authority before you bid.

Cars that can't get UAE plates

  • MOIAT says the UAE prohibits "the import, licensing and insuring of 7 types of vehicles, including burnt out, scrapped, flooded, disassembled cars, as well as cars damaged beyond repair and those with major manufacturing defects." The same page says "the system excludes imported light vehicles for re-export." (MOIAT, Imported Used Vehicle Technical Requirements, accessed 19 Oct 2026 · estimate — confirm locally)
  • Press coverage of the original rule also lists rebuilt cars. (Gulf News, 2018, accessed 19 Oct 2026 · estimate — confirm locally)
  • What this means: "salvage is welcome in Dubai" is true for the re-export trade, not for local plates. If you want the car registered here, a flood, fire or beyond-repair history is the main risk. Check the VIN with MOIAT before you bid.

Customs duty and import VAT

  • Customs duty: 5%, the GCC common tariff on goods from outside the GCC. u.ae gives Dubai's tariff as 5% of the CIF value. (ICP, GCC customs union · u.ae, customs duty and tariff, accessed 19 Oct 2026 · estimate — confirm locally)
  • Import VAT: 5% on the customs value, which includes freight, insurance and customs fees. (FTA VAT Guide, Automotive Sector §6.1, accessed 19 Oct 2026 · estimate — confirm locally)
  • Goods taken out of a free zone become dutiable when they leave it. (ICP, same link · estimate — confirm locally)
  • Illustration only, not a quote or official figure: if a car's CIF value were AED 40,000, 5% duty would be AED 2,000, and 5% VAT on AED 42,000 would be AED 2,100.
  • The dirham is pegged at 3.6725 AED per USD. (CBUAE, accessed 19 Oct 2026 · estimate — confirm locally)

Paperwork for local registration

  • MOIAT Product Status Statement, which confirms an imported used car can be registered: AED 200. (MOIAT service page, accessed 19 Oct 2026 · estimate — confirm locally) Product label cards are AED 1 each, 7 per vehicle. (MOIAT, accessed 19 Oct 2026 · estimate — confirm locally)
  • RTA (Dubai) asks for an Emirates ID, an electronic customs certificate, the sale agreement, and a MOIAT document showing GCC-spec compliance if the customs card doesn't show it. Then the car needs a technical inspection. (RTA, accessed 19 Oct 2026 · confirm locally)
  • u.ae lists inspection at an authorised centre (except vehicles produced in the last 3 years), electronic insurance, and a vehicle document such as a Vehicle Clearance Certificate or export certificate. (u.ae, registering vehicles, accessed 19 Oct 2026 · confirm locally)
  • Residents can register a maximum of 3 vehicles. (RTA, same link · confirm locally)

Right-hand drive and US-spec cars

  • RHD can't be registered in Dubai unless it has a classic plate. (RTA, link above · confirm locally)
  • US-spec cars may need MOIAT's GCC-conformity document (see above). We found no official model-by-model list of what passes without changes.

Shipping from the US: ranges, not prices

Public forwarder pages we checked on 19 Oct 2026 disagree a lot:

  • RoRo, US → Jebel Ali: about $1,200–$1,600 (BidGoDrive), $2,100–$2,300 from Baltimore depending on size (Royal Shipping Lines), and $2,200–$3,200 (Seaway Export).
  • Shared container: about $1,800–$2,600 per car (Seaway Export).
  • Transit: about 25–45 days depending on the coast (Royal, Seaway).

All of these are estimates, so confirm locally. Get several quotes, and ask what's port-to-port and what's charged at the destination.

What we couldn't confirm

  • Vehicle age: we found no current official text on a maximum age for imported cars. Ask your emirate's traffic authority before you buy.
  • Port handling, clearing-agent and registration fees: no reliable public figure. Get them from your agent.
  • Model-level GCC conformity: not published on the pages we read.

Work out your own max bid

The free FlipRadar max bid calculator is live. Enter the resale price, repair, buyer fee, transport, title and the profit you want. It shows the highest hammer price that still leaves that margin. It doesn't calculate UAE duty or VAT for you yet, so add your freight, 5% duty, 5% VAT and clearing costs into its lines. No account needed.

Open the max bid calculator

The FlipRadar Chrome extension scores the lot you have open, on your device. A new version with Market Profiles is in private beta and not yet in the Chrome Web Store. It adds dirham amounts, landed cost at your port, a walk-away line, and flags for flood, fire and beyond-repair lots when you choose local plates. The private beta is free. To try it, email hello@theflipradar.com and ask for the private-beta extension. To hear when it's released, use Get updates below. Product updates only.

Plans are listed on the pricing page. The FlipRadar home page explains the calculator and the extension.

The website lot board is sample / stale. It is not a live auction feed.
